Japan Elects First Openly Gay Man!!
Tokyo elected it's first openly gay official on Sunday!
Taiga Ishikawa was picked to serve in the Toshima ward assembly, and will be handling running that part of the city! He went up against 53 other candidates, too.
Taiga was first a writer, who openly admitted he was gay in a book he had written called Where is my boyfriend? and has been an LGBT supporter and activist since:
"I will do my best to make Toshima ward more friendly to LGBT people, young people, and foreigners."
As far as lesbian appointed figures go, Kanako Otsuji, was elected to the Osaka prefectural assembly in 2003. In 2007 she didn't win when she ran for the upper house of parliament as a member of the Democratic Party. Bummer!
It's so wonderful to see places all over the world finally accepting openly gay people as the normal, amazing people that they are!
Congrats, Taiga!
EQUALITY FOR ALL!!
