Fast Five’ Races to Top; ‘Prom’ Bombs
Fast Five blew past the box office competition this weekend, racing toward a projected $80 million haul, which would be the biggest opening of 2011.
The Vin Diesel-Dwayne Johnson vehicle engineered an enormous $34 million Friday on its way to #1.
Animated favorite Rio continues to do well, tracking to a $13 million second-place finish, while Madea’s Big Happy Family ($10.5 million) should edge Water for Elephants ($9.5 million) for the #3 spot.
The high school Disney release Prom ($5.5 million) opened weakly, as did fairy tale feature Hoodwinked Too! ($4 million).
Low-budget horror flick Insidious continues to stick around, tangling with Soul Surfer and African Cats. All three movies will be in the neighborhood of $3 million.
Scream 4’s estimated $2 million take should round out the Top Ten.
